I have decided that instead of trying to keep three blogs, putting out less-than-mediocre results on each one, to scale down and concentrate one being a good blogger with just one blog.  This blog is one of the blogs that I have chosen to no longer maintain. I hope that you'll follow me to the blog that I am keeping, but if you don't, that's cool. No hard feelings.

The Occasional Adventures of a Hermit

April 30, 2013

I know I'm being lame since I have only Y and Z to post about but I'm just done.  I quit caring about the A to Z challenge a couple weeks ago.  So I'm bailing.  I'm taking  a blog vacation.

Gimme a X!

Below is my contribution for today's letter of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. For more information about the challenge please visit their website http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com. If this is your first visit here from the challenge, I'm embroidering song lyrics for each letter. I'm also participating over at The Occasional Adventures of a Hermit, feel free to check that out too.

Confession: Sometimes, okay pretty much all the time, I have a mouth like a drunken sailor. So when I needed an X song and found this one, the very first line stuck out and I knew I had to embroider it and hang it up in my bedroom. I thought the hearts, flowers, stars and blobs would be a nice girly touch. :)

Song: In My Next Life
Singer: Terri Clark
Album: In My Next Life (single)
Writers: Jim Collins, Terri Clark & Tom Shapiro

Not the greatest video but it's all I could find. Sorry :(

Gimme a W!

If this is your first visit here from the challenge, I'm embroidering song lyrics for each letter. I'm also participating over at The Occasional Adventures of a Hermit, feel free to check that out too.

So here's W! Yay. Love this song. Hm. Whatever happened to this girl after she was on Nashville Star? Will have to Google it and figure it out.

Song: What If It All Goes Right
Singer: Melissa Lawson
Album: What If It All Goes Right (single)
Writer: I can't find it.  I think she wrote it but don't quote me on that.

Prepare yourselves! Three posts in quick succession. Over the weekend I got some work done on my V, W and X embroideries. None of them are finished, but you know.  So here's V.

Gimme a U!

Confession time: I've kinda thrown in the towel mentally on this year's A to Z.  As evidenced by the fact that I'm posting my U on the day that X is supposed to be posted.  If I had stuck to the schedule that I'd created for myself back in August when I decided on this theme, I'd be fine.  But I procrastinated and kept telling myself there was time.  Well.  Lesson learned.

Song: Up to My Ears in Tears
Singer: Alan Jackson
Album: A Lot About Livin'
Songwriters: Alan Jackson, Don Sampson

Gimme a T!

If this is your first visit here from the challenge, I'm embroidering song lyrics for each letter. I'm also participating over at The Occasional Adventures of a Hermit, feel free to check that out too.

I really struggled with the T embroidery. It took me several weeks to pick a song then I wasn't sure what  lyrics to use. Then when I did start on it, I wasn't feeling it. This is as far as I've gotten. It's almost two days late and I still only have this much done.

Song: Tips
Singer: Rodney Atkins

Here's what I got done of my S embroidery.  The lyrics are from "Stand Back Up" by Sugarland.  I love this song and have since the first time I heard it. I was looking forward to this embroidery :(  but I have to move on to T. I'll have to make sure I finish it after the challenge is done.

I originally hadn't intended to ever show any unfinished embroideries.  But things change.  So here's my R embroidery. It's not too far from being done but I have to move on to S or I'll just keep falling further and further behind. So partial embroideries might be the norm from here till Z.

Still behind obviously.  Finally got this one done early Sunday morning but I wasn't able to post it till now.  I heart Doris Day. She's my favorite actress hands down.

Gimme a N!

If this is your first visit here from the challenge, I'm embroidering song lyrics for each letter. I'm also participating over at The Occasional Adventures of a Hermit, feel free to check that out too.

You know what?  I can't remember picking this song.  I'm not sure if there was some great brain wave behind it or not.  It's a song that I've always liked.  It's never really made it onto my favorites; it's a good song and it does speak to me just not enough I guess.  So that's it. Not much to say about this one.

Song: No Fear
Singer: Terri Clark
Album: Fearless
Writer: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Terri Clark

Gimme a M!

ACK! I've had this embroidery done for a few weeks but I completely spazzed on getting the post written and scheduled. Argh. So I know there's a split and some people love Michael Jackson and others despise him. I love Michael Jackson. I think he's one of the greatest dancers and songwriters to have ever lived. And this, hands down, is my favorite Michael song. So here is my M embroidery, stolen from "Man in the Mirror."

Song: Man in the Mirror
Singer: Michael Jackson
Album: Bad
Writer: Glen Ballard, Siedah Garrett

Warning: The video's a tearjerker. Have tissues handy.

Gimme a L!

Ha! I finished this about 15 minutes ago. Talk about getting it done in the nick of time. I had to use this song for my L. It's one of the songs that helped pull me towards doing the embroideries. I discovered Firefly because of this song (I heard it on a Pub Songs podcast @ pubsong.com) And then after watching Serenity, the song made sense. It's really sad because I love Wash but it's a great song.

Song: Leaf on the Wind
Singers: Bedlam Bards
Album: On the Drift
Writer: James Hazlerig

And bonus video because I love Wash and if I was going to be in a dangerous space battle, I'd want him to be my pilot. The inspiration behind the song.

Gimme a K!

Blogger is freaking at it again. I have that little intro up there saved as a draft so I can just copy & paste and it ate it. Again. This is the second time this week. On this blog. It's eaten the damned intro over at my other blog EVERY day this week. And I had some partially written posts saved as drafts. Poof. Gone. You're not funny Blogger. This is pissing me off.

Anyways. I finished my embroidery for today just about an hour ago. Yaaaayyyyy! Here it is.

Song: Kick a Little
Singers: Little Texas
Album: Kick a Little
Writers: Porter Howell, Dwayne O'Brien, Brady Seals

Gimme a J!

So far, this is my favorite embroidery (keep in mind that I'm writing this in January and only have four others done, haha). This is the first one that I got courageous and drew a picture for (not just a wonky border) but an actual picture. Okay, so it's a silhouette but still. I'm happy with it. And yes, it took me almost a full afternoon to draw that. So you'd better like it.

I really love this one and think I'm going to hang it. Not sure if I'll put it over a canvas or frame it or hang it in a hoop. But it's going to be hung.

There's a lot of different versions of the song but the one that inspired me was the Brobdingnagian Bards' version. I love them.

Song: Jug of Punch
Singers: Brobdingnagian Bards
Album: Songs of Ireland
Writer: Traditional song

I finished this last night in the nick of time. Yes! But then I spazzed about actually posting it till this morning. Oops.

Anyways here it is. I mostly like it but I think I might have make some bad choices about the lyrics. I'm not sure. There's just that feeling of unease with it. I dunno.

Song: I'm Not of This World
Singer: Rissi Palmer

Writers: Rissi Palmer, Sarah Majors, Dan Shea

Gimme a H!

Below is my contribution for today's letter of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. For more information about the challenge please visit their website http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com. If this is your first visit here from the challenge, I'm embroidering song lyrics for each letter. Alright so. I had issues with this embroidery. I picked "Health to the Company," specifically the Brobdingnagian Bards' version. But then I started the actual embroidering and it was so small (I had made the font too small) I hated it. So I made it bigger and started over. Then a few lines into it I decided that I hated the color. I didn't start over but the color bugged me for the rest of the time. And at one point I looked at it and told myself I hated the whole thing and had chosen the wrong song. Not sure why. I love the song and like these specific lyrics. But this embroidery almost had me waving the white flag of defeat.

Song: Health to the Company
Singer: Brobdingnagian Bards
Album: A Faire to Remember
Writer: Traditional Song

Gimme a G!

If this is your first visit here from the challenge, I'm embroidering song lyrics for each letter. I'm also participating over at The Occasional Adventures of a Hermit, feel free to check that out too.

I didn't know right away what song I was going to do for G like I did with some of the other letters. But as soon as I heard  Alan Jackson' "Gonna Come Back as a Country Song" I knew it was the song. It's such a fun song.

Song: Gonna Come Back as a Country Song
Singer: Alan Jackson
Album: Thirty Miles West
Writer: Chris Stapleton, Terry McBride

Gimme a F!

I have to say that this embroidery is one of my favorites so far. The lyrics are from  "Flesh Against the Thorn" by Heather Alexander. It t didn't take me long to pick it; I've loved this song from the first time I heard it. I didn't draw the flower myself. I got it from wallpuput.com (search "rose line art") and added the lower leaf to it. I'm happy with it.

Song: Flesh Against the Thorn
Singer: Heather Alexander
Album: Midsummer
Writer: Heather Alexander (I think. I can't find it but I'm pretty certain I saw on her now-dead website that she wrote it.)

I couldn't find a YouTube video for this song. But you can hear a sample by going to the album's page on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00104WC24/ref=dm_sp_alb?ie=UTF8&qid=1364754269&sr=8-1

Gimme an E!

There was no real search for an E song because I knew that I wanted to use "Emotional Girl" for it. Terri Clark has always been one of my favorite singers and I love this song.

But I'm not happy with the embroidery. I could never find a font that felt right. I ended up just handwriting the lyrics on the muslin, so that's my handwriting you see, but I still don't like it.

Song: Emotional Girl
Singer: Terri Clark
Album: Just the Same
Writers: Rick Bowles, Terri Clark, Chris Waters

Gimme a D!

So my original plan when I planned all of this was to do the full lyrics of another song and do this really elaborate picture with them. And then I realized that I was overreaching my embroidery skills and that it would take me months just to draw the picture the way I wanted it (Monet, I'm not) let alone stitch it. So this is a backup song.

I like the lyrics and I'm happy with the stitching but there's just a general feeling of discontent with it. I think it's because it wasn't the first song that I wanted to do. Meh.

Song: Do Your Thing
Singer: *NSYNC
Album: Celebrity

Gimme a C!

It took me a few days to decide on this song, "Change" by the Warren Brothers for me C song.

I'm really happy with the way that it turned out. Instead of being really anal about keeping rows straight and letters all exactly uniform, I let them be crooked and some letters wonky. That and the many colors fit the lyrics. At least in my opinion.

Song: Change
Singers: The Warren Brothers
Album: Barely Famous Hits
Writers: Brett Warren, Brad Warren

Gimme a B!

Just like with A, it didn't take me long to settle on "Black Velvet Band" for my B song. My favorite version that I've ever heard was the Brobdingnagian Bards.

Not happy with this embroidery. It looks like I was drunk when I drew the ribbon border. I wasn't; I was just trying to make it not uniform. It's not uniform for sure. Definitely want to redo this one.

Song: Black Velvet Band
Singer: Brobdingnagian Bards
Album: The Holy Grail of Irish Drinking Songs
Writer: Traditional song

I couldn't find the Brobdingnagian Bards' version on YouTube but I found this version by The High Kings.

Gimme an A!

It's finally time for the Blogging from A to Z Challenge! Are you excited? I'm excited. It was just over a year ago when I stumbled on the Challenge's site. I figured I had nothing better to do and signed up on a whim. I had so much fun that I doubled down and signed up with two blogs this year and I'm already looking forward to next year's. Of course, none of that would be happening without Arlee Bird who came up with the Challenge. So thank you for creating the Challenge and then sharing it with everyone else.

So when I was picking out the songs that I would embroider lyrics from I knew almost right away that I was going to use Rissi Palmer's "Anybody Out There" for my A. I've had a deep attachment to this song since I heard it the very first time. Every song on Rissi Palmer's self-titled album reaches me in some way.

I'd like to revisit these lyrics in another embroidery. Maybe after the A to Z Challenge is done. I have an idea for them. More art than just words stitched on a piece of muslin.

Song: Anybody Out There
Singer: Rissi Palmer
Album: Rissi Palmer
Writers: Lisa Drew and Shaye Smith

Hiatus

I've got to take a hiatus for a couple weeks because I'm nowhere near ready for the A to Z challenge. And I refuse to quit before it even begins. If I don't return before, I will definitely be back on April 1. See you in a couple weeks.

Pretty Pink Bag

Alright, this is the second to last project made with the yarn that just won't go away.

I found the free pattern for this on Ravelry (get the pattern here, scroll past the Dutch for the English). The only change that I made was in the straps. Instead of using D-Rings and crocheted straps I did fabric straps and attached them about halfway down the bag  so it flops over to close itself. Haven't used it yet but I think it will be a good purse. Fun and bright for sure.

Liebster Award

So... I have a love/hate relationship with blog awards. Yeah, they're fun and silly but they make me feel so middle school. If you don't get one, it kind of hurts your feelings (at least it does mine when I see them on blogs I frequent). But if you do get one, there's that Yay! feeling and then for me that's followed by "But so-and-so didn't get one..."

Click from Click's Clan has given me the Liebster award. Aw, thanks.

But I'm going to break the rules. I'll answer the questions and do the facts but I'm not passing it on. For the reasons that I stated above and also the fact that the blogs I would generally give it to all have 200+ followers (it's for blogs with less than 200) and because other than Click, I haven't suscribed to any new blogs in a few weeks. And you can't regift this. So... I'm being a rebel.

So you're supposed to share 11 facts about yourself and then answer the 11 questions the gifter wrote. So here goes.

Random facts...
  1. My Aunt Kay tried to teach me how to crochet as a child but it didn't take. And when I taught myself as an adult, she died before knowing that I picked it up. For some reason, that really bothers me.
  2. I refuse to leave the house with unpainted toenails.
  3. I have finally finished the story mode of Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 after playing it for almost a year. A gamer I'm not. Now I'm trying to find all the gold bricks so I can unlock the Voldemort character.
  4. I'm an incessant multi-tasker and have been known to watch tv, blog and crochet all at the same time.
  5. I no longer channel surf because of the Kardashians. It's like a train wreck. You just can't help watching and I'd end up killing several hours and brain cells.
  6. I'm an expert procrastinator and have to live and die by my to-do list to get anything done.
  7. I am attempting the English method in my learning to knit. I tried Continental too but ended up moving the needle too much and unraveled everything.
  8. My backpack weighed an average 35 pounds in middle school and high school. And I remember maybe 25% of what I learned and actually use less than that. Lame.
  9. After becoming hooked on watching Hotel Impossible I want to own my own hotel. Maybe more of a bed and breakfast. I think it might be fun.
  10. I won't buy any yarn that can't be machine washed and dried. I hand wash NOTHING. Seriously. Who's got time to do that all the time?
  11. I've gotten so used to my Fitbit that when I don't wear it I feel naked.

And now the 11 questions she wrote...
  1. How old were you when you first started using the internet? Um14/15ish. It was AOL too. The kind that used the phone line. Haha. Good times.
  2. What’s your favourite memory from school? I hated school. Hm. It was after I graduated but I'll say when I went to France. It was with my high school French teacher so it counts as a school thing.
  3. You can invite five people, living or dead, to a fantasy dinner party. Who do you invite? My maternal grandmother, my aunt Kay, Audrey Hepburn, Doris Day and Katherine Hepburn.
  4. If you weren’t doing your current job, what job would you be doing? A million other things. I dunno own a B&B, an amusement park, own rental properties, own a yarn store. I dunno.
  5. What is your favourite photo or picture? (If you can’t share it, describe it). I dunno. I've never really thought about it.
  6. What is your favourite room in your house? I don't really have one.
  7. Why do you blog? Creative outlet, to make friends, boredom...
  8. Who was your first crush on? Kellen in elementary school. Man, he was such a good friend and so cute. I wonder what happened to him.
  9. Do you still have your first teddy/stuffed toy? Maybe. I don't know. No one's ever said that a specific toy was my first.
  10. Where in the world would you like to visit? England, Ireland, Scotland, France (again), Monaco, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Canada, Australia....
  11. What is the worst book you’ve ever read? I know this is going to piss people off but the second one of the Twilight series. The first one was meh but the second one was even worse! I didn't even read the full thing. I've always regretted not standing up to peer pressure and just being like "No, the first book sucked butt. I REFUSE to read this shit." Seriously. It was horrible. I want that time and those brain cells back.
Alright. There you are. 11 facts. 11 answered questions. Don't forget to check out Click's Clan.

That's Not Yarn...

We interrupt your regularly scheduled post about evil yarn to bring you this totally different, non-yarn project.

Last weekend, I made myself a pretty dress. I used Simplicity #1882 and Kona Cotton in Pomegranate Pink (bought at Jo-Ann). My color inspiration was Princess Aurora's dress because for some reason this pattern makes me think of her. And just because Prince Harry hasn't married me yet, doesn't mean that I can't start dressing like a princess now.

Anyways, the only modification I made was to make the pocket flaps and collar the same color as the dress instead of in a contrasting fabric. I thought it would be more versatile as one solid color.

Cozy Neck Wrap

Hey guess what? I made ANOTHER project with that yarn!

This time it's the Cozy Neck Wrap by Cynthia Harris. Gauge and I are not getting along lately. If my stitches are the right width, the height's not right. If they're the right height, the width is jacked up. So this scarf ended up the right length (right stitch width) but not as wide as it should have been (wrong stitch height). If I can ever get rid of this yarn I'm going to try to figure out what's wrong with my gauge. I have an idea what it is but I need to sit down with an uncursed yarn and a simple pattern and play with it.

And yes. There's still more projects to come with this yarn.

Reversible Cabled Headband

You know that song Lambchop used to sing? "This is the song that doesn't end...." I have written a new version. Ready?

This is the yarn that doesn't end
Yes, it goes on and on my friend
Some people started using it not knowing what it was
And they'll continue using it forever just because
This is the yarn that doesn't end....

I ended up making Reversible Cabled Headband by Drew Emborsky with the orange. It's really easy and quick and came out super cute (and warm). But again. It did not use all the yarn I wanted it to. (Ravelry project page)

Why won't this yarn just go away? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Cabled Tam

And in the continuing saga of The Yarn That Just Won't End...

Seriously.

So I made this hat. It's the Cabled Tam by Drew Emborsky from It's All Caps. I had thought I'd made this hat before. But apparently I made what I thought was this hat because, ha, I totally didn't follow the pattern the first time. Seriously. Like I was throwing in HDCs at random the first time. So I actually followed the pattern this time and what do you know, it's easier when you follow the pattern. You can check out the details (hook size, yarn) and favorite it on its Ravelry project page. Cause you know. I can't possibly be bothered telling you the hook and yarn here when it's filled out on Ravelry.

But it didn't use nearly the amount of yarn that I wanted it to. Sigh.

I was given a Leibster award. I'll post about it in a few days. It's on my to-do list.

Granny Scarf

I haven't forgotten about the Wild Flower Jacket. I've just put it into hibernation for a few weeks so I can work on other projects. I got frustrated and tired of frogging the sleeves. So rather than keep compounding the frustration, I put it away and picked out some other projects to do.

One of which was the Harlequin Hoodie (available for free on Ravelry). I discovered it on Pinterest and when I realized a couple weeks ago that I don't really have any bright and happy scarves, this felt like a perfect fit.

So I bought the yarn and started it. But when I finished the hood, I just wasn't feeling the hood part. I ended up using a modification of a granny rectangle method and made a circle scarf that can be wrapped a couple times around my neck to make it a cowl. You can see all the details on its Ravelry project page.

But I swear the yarn was breeding while I was making more projects with the leftover. It just keeps going and going. A hat, headband, scarf and purse later and I STILL have a bunch left. That I'm using to attempt to knit. I'll let you know how that goes.

It's Official

Are you ready?! Did you sign up yet?

I'm talking about the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I've mentioned it before but it's a blogging challenge in April that you start with the letter A on the first and work your way through the alphabet. It doesn't matter what you blog about as long as it somehow corresponds to that day's assigned letter.

It's a ton of fun and a really great way to find new blogs, make bloggy friends and have your blog seen by a boat-load of people.

So I'm signed up. As numbers 20 and 21 since I'm participating here and on my main blog. I'm committed now. No more farting around. I HAVE to finish the embroideries come hell or high water.

I Haven't Run Away

I neglect this blog. It's not that I'm not crafting; it's that I'm not really blogging about it. Then on top of it I keep doing that thing where I delete my posts and start all over. It's weird, I know.

But this year I'm going to be a better blogger though on all of my blogs. And this one is where I can definitely show the most improvement. So...

I'm currently working on two major projects: my submissions for the 2013 Blogging from A to Z Challenge and a crocheted jacket.

For the A to Z Challenge, I'm embroidering song lyrics for each letter of the alphabet. If I were sticking to the schedule I created myself in September, I'd have A through L done and be most of the way done with M by now. But instead I have A through D done and am about half done on E and J. I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but I'll keep going until the last possible minute.

And the crochet jacket is the Wild Flower from DROPS Design. It's the first time that I've made something wearable like this. I've made wraps, hats, scarves, gloves, a couple shrugs that are just rectangles sewn partially up but never a jacket. There's been a lot of frogging but I'm getting close to done. I have the body of the jacket and one sleeve completely finished. I'm working on the second sleeve now then it's just assembling and the border. The end is in sight.
